Humans have evolved to thrive in scarcity and in a dangerous environment, which is the original natural state.
Humans have also done so as opportunistic omnivores, taking advantage of whatever is available when it is available, since it may not be available tomorrow.
This makes these things natural for humans:
Take advantage now of what is available: short-term focus
Minimize energy expenditure: make as little effort as possible
Minimize risk that can kill you: only that which is necessary to survive
This leads to maximizing the probability of surviving one more day, which has historically been humanity's biggest problem. We evolved to be very good at that.
That's why all this is natural.
That's why entrepreneurship is unnatural, because it requires:
Investment / time to create something: long-term approach
High demand from onself to do something difficult: maximum effort
Understanding and accepting risk: much more risk than the average person
This is why entrepreneurship is so difficult, so counter-intuitive, so unnatural, and yet so necessary.
Why is it so?
Because it is what improves the lives of the entrepreneur and everyone else. It is what creates wealth and improves everyone's life in general.
Entrepreneurship is what creates something that was not there before. That's enough for us to deduce that without entrepreneurship you can't create anything, but live off what already exists, and that's the definition of not progressing.
How do we make an effort to convey that the mindset required for entrepreneurship is difficult, but radically key?
How do we inspire to do the unnatural and support those who are capable of wanting to create for the benefit of all?
If we want more entrepreneurs we need to explain this and counter the culture of short-termism, minimum effort and zero risk.
These days I focus more and more on this and explain that neither private investment, nor public subsidies, nor support for entrepreneurship can generate a great impact if we do not manage to change the mindset towards an entrepreneurial mentality first.
That is the strategic thing, everything else is tactical and it'll find the way.
My thanks to those who do the unnatural.
